Meet our Counselors

Madelynn Cuéllar, LPC, LMFT, RPT™, EMDR Certified Therapist™

Counselor and Founder of Salma Psychotherapy

  • I practice counseling from a trauma informed, culturally responsive, and somatically oriented lens. I view each individual as the expert of their experience, including children and teens, and collaborate with individuals and families to support meaningful change. I believe that we heal best when we can attune to our emotional and somatic experience of the present moment. I work from a relational model to create a secure place for processing the past and reorienting to the present and future.

My hope is for you and your family to feel safe and comfortable enough to bring your full selves into the counseling room. My clients experience a genuine relational warmth while also learning about the brain and body’s response to stress and trauma. This helps my clients feel secure enough to explore the difficult experiences in their life while also learning how to integrate and heal from their traumas.

You and I will work together to develop an understanding of how your lived experiences shape your orientation to safety and connectedness in the present. As you learn to attune to safety within the therapeutic relationship, my hope is that you will develop the inner resources you need to step more fully into your authentic self outside of counseling.

  • I received my Master of Arts in Professional Counseling and Marriage, Couples, and Family Counseling from Texas State in 2020 and my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Texas in Austin in 2017. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), a Registered Play Therapist (RPT™), and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). I have worked as a counselor to individuals, children, teens, and families recovering from trauma for the past 6 years in various agency and group practice settings. Although I work with a wide array of traumas across the lifespan, I have primarily focused on supporting clients recovering from immigration trauma, relational trauma, domestic violence, and sexual assault. I have lived briefly in Turkey and am proficient in Turkish.

Melissa Salas, Counseling Student Intern

  • I deeply value the power of authentic emotional connection. My goal is to help you better understand what you're feeling and why. By using approaches like Parts Work (Internal Family Systems) and Polyvagal Theory, we can gently explore the experiences and patterns that shape your inner world—ultimately guiding you toward your most authentic self.

My approach to counseling is direct, compassionate, and nonjudgmental. I honor your vulnerability and recognize that you are the expert in your own life. My role is to support you in understanding and exploring your experiences in a way that is both ethical and empowering. Together, we’ll move at a pace that feels right for you, gently challenging areas where you feel ready to grow. I believe in your autonomy and want to help you build a life that feels true to who you are.

  • I am a Graduate Student Intern pursuing my degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Lamar University.

Before entering the field of counseling, I spent five years as an early childhood educator. During that time, I discovered just how essential family dynamics and our relationships with one another are to living an authentic and fulfilling life. I worked closely with young children to help them connect with their emotions and build foundational self-regulation skills. I also supported families—particularly those navigating special needs diagnoses—by assisting them through the process and helping integrate inclusive education practices.

Growing up in the Rio Grande Valley, I became acutely aware of the stigma surrounding mental health. Coming from an immigrant household, I witnessed firsthand the need for safe, nonjudgmental spaces where people can speak openly and vulnerably. This experience continues to shape my approach to therapy and fuels my passion for making mental health care accessible and affirming for all individuals.

  • When I’m not counseling, I enjoy spending my time cooking, journaling, and catching up on my favorite mental health podcasts. One of my passions is photography—I love capturing the beauty in fleeting moments and finding meaning in the everyday. These creative outlets help me stay grounded and connected, both to myself and to the world around me.
